Pitt-Bradford Named one of the 'Best Colleges in the Northeast'

For the 10th consecutive year, the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford has been recognized as one of the best colleges in the Northeast by The Princeton Review.

“The selection as one of the best colleges in the Northeast for a 10th consecutive year, just as we’re closing in on our 50th anniversary as a regional college of the University of Pittsburgh, underscores how far we’ve come and how much we’ve accomplished over the years,” said Dr. Livingston Alexander, Pitt-Bradford president. “This recognition is significant because, in selecting institutions for its ‘Best Colleges’ list, it focuses on input from students. The comments from students demonstrate how much they value the academically challenging and personalized environment we create for them at Pitt-Bradford.”

The Princeton Review selected Pitt-Bradford as one of 226 institutions in its “Best in the Northeast” section of its website feature “2014 Best Colleges: Region by Region.”

Besides Pennsylvania, the colleges and universities chosen for the list are located in 10 states: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont, and the District of Columbia.

Robert Franek, Princeton Review's senior vice president and publisher, said, “We chose these as our ‘regional best’ colleges mainly for their excellent academic programs. From several hundred schools in each region, we winnowed our list based on institutional data we collected directly from the schools, our visits to schools over the years, and the opinions of our staff, plus college counselors and advisors whose recommendations we invite. We also take into account what students at the schools reported to us.”

Students rated their own schools on several issues -- from the accessibility of their professors to quality of the campus food.

When surveyed, Pitt-Bradford students made many positive comments about the university’s professors and academic programs. Students said the small class sizes were the university’s major strength and that the professors are willing to help and are “extremely well versed in their specific fields of study.”

Students also responded positively about the student body, which they said was friendly, welcoming and accepting of all types. “At Pitt-Bradford you are a person with a name, a face, and people are going to know you; you’re not a number,” one student said. Another student added, “I’ve learned that all you really have to do is introduce yourself and find something in common with them.”

Pitt-Bradford’s personalized campus was cited in another national accolade in January of this year when the college research website TheBestColleges.com named it one of the 10 best regional campuses in the United States.

“Professors are considered students’ friends, going above and beyond to facilitate learning by extending office hours, giving out their private cell phone numbers and more,” according to the article.

Additionally, last year, The Princeton Review named Pitt-Bradford a Best Value College, one of only eight Pennsylvania colleges named to the list that year

Guest Post: Bringing Back the Dead

And the last guest post for June by Aaron Paul Lazar rather follows on from last week's. I think it's kind of fun to look at these things, at how writers manipulate this whole other universe...and sometimes I wonder if, as in my Displaced Detective series, that universe really exists someplace...and what the effects of our manipulations might really be...-Stephanie Osbornhttp://www.stephanie-osborn.com~~~Bringing Back the Dead by Aaron Paul Lazar We writers don't often get to resurrect our dead.   For years I’ve regretted murdering one particularly sweet character early in my LeGarde Mystery series, specifically in the second book, Upstaged, where a psychopath lurks backstage in the high school musical. The victim: Ethel Fox, who loves dogs, is a high school janitor, and volunteers to help with the drama club’s productions. Ethel also happens to have Down Syndrome. Looking back now, I realize I probably cast her as a victim to rile up my readers with righteous anger, and to make the villain scream “evil”.  Now, five years later, I want a do-over.  My cardinal rules include no killing of main characters—after all, these folks carry the series through its ten books. I’ll never kill Gus or Camille, or Siegfried, even if you might worry that they’re dead in some books[1] (wink). But the featured characters, who change from book to book, are always fair game.  When my publisher, Lida Quillen at Twilight Times Books, expressed interest in re-releasing my first two books[2] along with the rest of the series as the “author’s preferred editions,” I was overjoyed. Now I could repair some of those newbie-writer awkward phrases, get rid of the excess adverbs and adjectives, and tidy up the prose. Besides, after writing fifteen books (I have three mystery series now), my skills have improved. It’s only natural to look back at one’s first books and grimace. So, after securing rights from the first publisher, I signed the new contracts and started the rewrites. I didn’t change much in Double Forté, except to tidy up the prose, add a bit more spice to a few scenes, and delete a bunch of excess words.  But when I started to polish Upstaged, I remembered an embarrassing and awkward experience I had last year, and was consumed with the idea of tweaking the plot.  While working at a facility for physically and intellectually challenged adults who love music, art, writing, and theater, my daughter Melanie invited me in to help during their summer festival. I arrived feeling quite virtuous, since I took a vacation day to volunteer, but instead of “helping” the folks there, I spent the day being humbled, time after time. The individuals radiated joy, and were delirious with excitement because they were about to put on a musical show for their visitors. Family and friends crowded the facility, and although I saw evidence of serious physical and intellectual “disabilities,” I was convinced these lovely people did not in any sense of the word feel disabled on that day.  They danced and sang in the hallways, held hands and giggled, painted gorgeous pictures from wheelchairs (some were displayed in local art shows), and delighted in the costumes in which they’d been dressed for the celebration.  While I snapped pictures for their scrapbooks, I fell in love with the people and teachers, was suitably humbled, and realized that after eight hours of fun, I had received much more than I’d given. A few days later, I donated Upstaged to one of the higher functioning members of the writing class, knowing that she loved musicals. So, a year passed, and the writing teacher asked me if I’d come in and give a talk to her students who loved books and writing. Thrilled, I arranged the date. We had a blast, and talked for almost two hours. They asked great questions, and I delighted in their company. It was after the class while I was donating more books that I suddenly remembered I’d killed off a character with Down Syndrome in Upstaged.  What had I been thinking? Why did I donate the very book where I let the villain kill a character who represents so many people at this arts center? Was I insane? To be honest, it had been so long since I’d written the book, I really hadn’t remembered about Ethel, but when I did, I kicked myself. Repeatedly. It was this experience that made me bring Ethel back to life. Not only did I prevent her murder in a way that didn’t goof up the original plot, but I gave her a cuter name. What kind of a name is Ethel for a sweet, helpful, loving lady? Her new name is Cindi. I think it fits her. Don’t you? The Lord keeps me humble. It’s a good thing. There’s nothing worse than a big-headed fool. But frankly, he doesn’t have to work very hard at it. I give him lots of help. The newest book in the LeGarde Mystery series, Don’t Let the Wind Catch You, #6, has just been released. It’s stands alone like all of the other books in the series and can be read in any order. I try to write all my series like this so folks can pick up any book at any time and enjoy it. Don’t Let the Wind Catch You is a sequel to the prequel of Double Forté (Tremolo: cry of the loon was the prequel.)  I seriously hope there are no urges ten years from now to get another “do-over” with this book, because that cycle of self-doubt and the obsessive need to perfect can be exhausting. I hereby declare that I am happy with this story and will not come back in years to come to nitpick it to death. There. I said it. Now I just have to stick to my promise (grin). Sometimes we get it, and sometimes we don't. And sometimes, I think, it's better that the book is taken out of our hands at a certain point! I know that I have an unquenchable tendency to "tweak" repeatedly, and will continue to do so no matter how good the book may already be. These tweaks, if not reined in, can actually spoil a perfectly good book. So I am, so far, thankful that I have NOT had an opportunity for a "do-over"!-Stephanie Osbornhttp://www.stephanie-osborn.com

Evidently there is a fair amount of betting going on in London right now about what the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will name their new prince.The favorites are George, with the odds of that at 9/4, and James, at 11/4. Other names with fairly short odds include Alexander, Henry, and Louis. Long shots are Daniel and Andrew.I sincerely hope they don't give their baby any of those boring names.It would be far more interesting and exciting if they would consider naming the prince Jamaal, or Hakeem. Or maybe Dajuan, or Donte, or LeShon, or Majique, or L'Zereck.The possibilities for creativity in this situation are endless.They might even, in honor of -- and sympathy with -- a young man who seems on the verge of canonization, name their son Trayvon. That would demonstrate true cross-Atlantic solidarity.In fact, if I may be so bold, I would appreciate it very much if any of my readers who happen to be members of the British royal family would be willing to pass my suggestions along to William and Kate.I feel so strongly about this that I am going to fly to London tomorrow to see if I can gain an audience. If not, at least I'll be placing a few bets.(If I don't write for a few days, it's because I'm in England.)

2013 BBQ at the Big House Visitors

Rather than having a junior day or Friday Night Lights type of event, the coaches host players for a BBQ in July. This year's event will take place on July 27 (for 2015/2016 prospects) and July 28 (for 2014 prospects). Here's a list of the players who have said they'll be at the BBQ:Joshua Alabi - DT - Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Alabi is a 6'4", 260 lb. prospect for 2015. He has offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Tennessee, and Wisconsin, among others.  247 Sports ranks him as the #26 offensive tackle and #229 player overall.Kalen Ballage - RB - Peyton (CO) Falcon: I wrote up a scouting report on Ballage in May. He claims a 4.51 forty and as a sophomore in 2012, he had 66 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 2 interceptions, 3 pass breakups, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 fumble recovery.Messiah DeWeaver - QB - Trotwood (OH) Trotwood-Madison: DeWeaver is a 6'2", 180 lb. prospect for 2016 with no offers at this time. He camped at Michigan in June. He was a teammate with incoming freshman linebacker Mike McCray II.David Edwards - QB - Downers Grove (IL) North: Edwards is a 6'6", 225 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Illinois and Vanderbilt. As a sophomore in 2012, he had 502 passing yards for 3 touchdowns, along with 719 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns.Michael Ferns III - LB - St. Clairsville (OH) St. Clairsville: Ferns committed to Michigan last August.Desmond Fitzpatrick - WR - Farmington (MI) Farmington: Fitzpatrick is a 5'11", 165 lb. prospect for 2016 offers from Indiana, Ohio, and Toledo. He played for Farmington Harrison last season, but is transferring to Farmington High for the coming year.Leonard Fournette - RB - New Orleans (LA) St. Augustine: Fournette is a 6'1", 225 lb. prospect with offers from just about everyone; his two leaders appear to be Alabama and LSU. Michigan was not mentioned in regard to Fournette until Jabrill Peppers committed and started talking to and about him being a part of Michigan's class. According to 247's Composite ranking, Fournette is the #1 player in the entire class. As a junior in 2012, he had 196 carries for 2,136 yards and 31 touchdowns. That's 10.9 yards/carry. Chances are slim that Michigan jumps in front of those two SEC schools, but it can't hurt to get him on campus. There's a chance that he might really like it, and it puts Ann Arbor in the minds of other top prospects.Da'Shawn Hand - DE - Woodbridge (VA) Woodbridge: I wrote up a scouting report on Hand back in February. He recently announced a top three that included Michigan and eliminated long-time favorite Virginia Tech. UPDATE: Hand will not be able to make the visit.Dele Harding - LB - Elkton (MD) Eastern Christian Academy: Harding is a 6'1", 218 lb. prospect for 2016 with offers from Massachusetts, Tennessee, and USC. He's the teammate of Michigan commits Brandon Watson and Freddy Canteen. Harding camped at Michigan back in June and was told by Michigan's coaches that he would probably be offered down the road, but it's still pretty early for the class of 2016.Drake Harris - WR - Grand Rapids (MI) Christian: Harris committed to Michigan in April.Justin Hilliard - LB - Cincinnati (OH) St. Xavier: Hilliard is a 6'2", 225 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Arkansas, Iowa, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, among others. As a sophomore in 2012, he had 65 tackles, 7 sacks, 2 interceptions, and 1 forced fumble. It's still fairly early, but in my opinion, Hilliard is the best Ohio player in his class.Jonathan Hilliman - RB - Jersey City (NJ) St. Peters Prep: I wrote up a scouting report on Hilliman back in December. He recently announced Ohio State as his favorite. UPDATE: Hilliman is no longer planning to attend the event.Corey Holmes - WR - Fort Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas: I wrote up a scouting report on Holmes a few months ago. He declared Michigan as his leader early, but the Wolverines seem to have faded, perhaps by their choice. It seems like Michigan has been pursuing some other wide receiver targets harder. UPDATE: Holmes committed to Notre Dame and will not visit Michigan.Adoree' Jackson - CB - Junipero (CA) Gardena Serra: I wrote up a scouting report on Jackson back in March. He has aspirations in track and field, so while he likes Michigan, it might be tough to keep him away from schools that have better track programs. UPDATE: Jackson likely will not visit at this point.Van Jefferson - WR - Brentwood (TN) Ravenwood: Jefferson is a 6'2", 164 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Middle Tennessee State, Penn State, and Vanderbilt. He used to attend Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary's and is the son of former Detroit Lions wideout and current Tennessee Titans wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson. The elder Jefferson attended Central Florida, in case you were wondering. UPDATE: Jefferson no longer plans to attend the BBQ.Sterling Jenkins - OT - Pittsburgh (PA) Baldwin: Jenkins is a 6'8", 305 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, and Pitt, among others. According to 247 Sports, he's a 4-star, the #7 offensive tackle, and the #86 overall player in his class.Tyree Kinnel - S - Huber Heights (OH) Wayne: Kinnel is a 6'0", 190 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Arkansas and Kentucky. He has visited Michigan numerous times and is getting a bit antsy for an offer, but the fact that he keeps visiting Ann Arbor suggests that he really likes the Wolverines.Marshon Lattimore - WR - Cleveland (OH) Glenville: Lattimore is a 6'0", 175 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, and USC, among others. According to 247's Composite ranking, he's a 5-star, the #5 cornerback, and the #32 overall player in the country. Almost everyone expects him to pick Ohio State eventually, but he was invited to the BBQ and is considering attending, so there will be a chance to sway him.Thiyo Lukusa - OG - Traverse City (MI) West: Lukusa is a 6'5", 300 lb. prospect for the class of 2016. He has no offers at this time.Lawrence Marshall - DE - Southfield (MI) Southfield: Marshall committed to Michigan in May.Osa Masina - LB - Salt Lake City (UT) Brighton: Masina is a 6'4", 207 lb. prospect for 2015 with offers from Michigan, Oklahoma, Utah, and Wisconsin, along with several others. He has a brother at Utah and the Utes appear to be Osa's favorite. According to 247 Sports, he's a 4-star, the #17 athlete, and the #206 overall player in his class.Malik McDowell - DE - Detroit (MI) Loyola: McDowell is a 6'7", 290 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and numerous others. According to 247's Composite ranking, he's a 5-star, the #3 strongside end, and the #33 player overall. He is attempting to transfer to Southfield and become teammates with Lawrence Marshall, but that hasn't been finalized yet.Montae Nicholson - S - Monroeville (PA) Gateway: Nicholson is a 6'3", 200 lb. prospect with offers from Florida State, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Stanford, and Virginia Tech, among others. As a junior in 2012, he had 28 tackles, 2 interceptions (both returned for touchdowns), 2 forced fumbles, and 3 fumble recoveries; he also had 25 receptions for 653 yards and 6 touchdowns. He was one of Michigan's first few offers for the 2014 class after camping in Ann Arbor last summer. While Michigan is recruiting him as a safety, he's also considering playing wide receiver in college. UPDATE: Nicholson is no longer attending the BBQ.Darrion Owens - LB - Orange Park (FL) Oakleaf: Owens is a 6'3", 216 lb. prospect with offers from Auburn, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, and Ohio State, among others. He plays some safety in high school, but Michigan is looking at him as a SAM linebacker. As a junior in 2012, he had 101 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions, 6 pass breakups, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery. According to 247's Composite ranking, he's a 3-star, the #42 outside linebacker, and the #561 player overall. UPDATE: Owens committed to Miami and said he won't take other visits.Tommy Roush - OG - Traverse City (MI) West: Roush is a 6'3", 270 lb. prospect for 2016 with no offers at this time. He camped at Michigan in June. Many people presume Michigan to be his leader. I have seen some questions on whether Michigan is interested in offering Settle, but if you watch his video, I don't see any reason not to pursue him. UPDATE: Settle, who was supposed to ride with Da'Shawn Hand, will not be able to visit now that Hand isn't visiting.Wilton Speight - QB - Richmond (VA) Collegiate: Speight committed to Michigan in February.Erik Swenson - OT - Downers Grove (IL) South: Swenson is a 6'6", 285. lb prospect for 2016 with offers from Illinois, Michigan, Northwestern, Notre Dame, and Ohio State. If you're wondering what it takes to look like The Rock (aside from ridiculous genetics), the new "Hercules" star just revealed the diet he maintains to play the son of Zeus -- and it's unbelievable. Rock just posted the breakdown on Twitter -- and it includes 7 full meals with ridiculous quantities of food, including rice, 14 egg whites, all kinds of vegetables, and more than 3 POUNDS of meat. It's been working too ... Rock's been posting pics of himself during filming (above) and he's more jacked than ever. Unfortunately, you can't just eat like The Rock to look like him ... you kinda have to go to the gym too.....Maybe tomorrow.

All right! Interesting perspective, no mystery that the NHL isn’t consistent in their call of the head shots, it’s well documented. Here’s my question; why is it, that players like Dustin Brown of the L.A. Kings has been able to get away with many of the same kind of hits for so long? Most of them have been deemed hockey hits, just like the hit that Brown put on Toews in the Western Conference Finals. Steve Rosenbloom, The RosenBlog – Boston defenseman Johnny Boychuk went after Jonathan Toews' head with his forearm in the second period of Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final on Saturday night. Toews didn’t play a shift in the third period. Game over. Game 6 over for Boychuk. Just as a penalty in the first period is supposed to be a penalty in the third period, then a head-hunting move in Game 5 of the final ought to warrant a suspension the way it does in Game 1 of the regular season. It wouldn't matter if it was Viktor Stalberg instead of Toews, but I'd bet if it was done to Sidney Crosby, then Boychuk would've been suspended between periods. The product the NHL is selling is not Boychuk’s act. It is selling exceptionally skilled players. It is selling stars such as Toews and Crosby. Like Crosby, Toews is part of the Hart Trophy conversation. At least he is when Eastern writers stay up late to watch. Also like Crosby, Toews is a repeated concussion victim whose head is targeted continually. The league cannot afford these kinds of acts. The Hawks certainly can’t. I have always said, “that the NHL has two sets of rules. One for goon’s and fourth line players and one for super stars.” I don't know why the NHL didn't take action against Boychuk or why they pick and choose which hits to discipline. I don’t know how anyone can make rhyme or reason out of the NHL’s Department of Player Safety’s rulings anymore. They're allover the place. I like everyone else is confused, as a Bruins fan, I guess I am kind of relieved that Boychuk can play, but know he may have gotten away with one, but so have a lot of other players, as well. It sounds like both Toews and Bergy are going to play in game six tonight.

Here's how you know your kids are growing up, their schoolwork evolves from abcs and playtime to full on dioramas and historical reports. sigh. College is a hop, skip away.This year the Kid had his very first oral report and they have to dress up in period outfits, no less. He picked Thomas Edison which was great in terms of historical facts, but hardly an outfit that we were familiar with.A quick internet search and trip to the costume store and we had a nice 1900s era brown suit with tails all ready to go. The Kid researched and did his written report but I thought it'd be fun to add an element of comics too.A big shoutout to my friend Bully who always comes through for me whenever I ask things like... "Does a comic book about Thomas Edison exist??" Of course it does.I ordered the biographical comics Thomas Edison and the Electric Age by Tatsuyoshi Kurosawa. In reading it through it was very visual and all historically accurate too, so it just added more fun facts to the Kid's research on the history of Wizard of Menlo Park..The Kid couldn't help but notice that the manga Thomas Edison looked an awful lot like his new obsession, Doctor Who. What with the brown suit and if you squint your eyes just so that's...surely a sonic screwdriver in his hand, no? Uh...no. But that didn't stop him from adding his own touch to the book cover.Suit on, notecards in hand, the Kid was rehearsed and ready to go. But that wasn't quite enough. See, the Kid is an inventor himself and wanted just the right prop. So he got a flashlight, fashioned a mock 'lightbulb' out some of my architectural trace around the top, and presto! Instant faux lightbulb, just what he needed for the wow factor for his presentation.I learned a lot about Thomas Edison but more than that, I'm prepared for next year when it's the Baby's turn for historical reports. "What do you mean you don't want to do Thomas Edison? No? Are you SURE?? But, I have the comic book...and a prop....and..." Oh well.

NFL: The Colts made the sneaky good signing of the week

by JTWith people watching the NBA Finals, trying to #FreeOcho and wondering what kind of the trouble PacMan will get into people probably were not paying attention to the sniper move the Colts pulled off this week. You don’t have to be a Colts fan to respect their come up. This week they signed former New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw. Bradshaw isn’t a superstar back but no matter how you cut he’s a very good player. He has battled injuries the last few years but most of the time you can count on him out there making a difference. Despite the injuries he is only 27 years old and coming off of a thousand yard year so I’m willing to bet he still has some gas in the tank. He was only cut by the Giants because of cap reasons it wasn’t play on the field. Bradshaw is a dual threat in the backfield, even though he isn’t a huge back he runs with power and is a major threat in the screen game.The Colts gave the back a one year deal worth a base 1.1 million, 250k signing bonus along with possible 650k game bonuses. The one year deal probably isn’t what Bradshaw wanted but another good year may put him in good position to negotiate next year.Andrew Luck is one happy camper but I bet Donald Brown and Vick Ballard are pissed. No matter what kind of good PR interviews they will or won’t give they know Bradshaw is a threat to a big chunk of the playing time in that backfield.
