As The Shit Hits The Fan at KTVU, A Producer in the Building; Quick Bullet Points

'Oh ***t' KTVU producer Brad Belstock, pictured, tweeted these two words yesterday after the humiliating broadcast went outKTVU producer, Brad Belstock (pictured), tweeted out, "Oh shit" on Friday. Indeed.Quick bullet points:*Blaming an NTSB intern is counter-productive and doesn't help KTVU. There is NO excuse. Own up to the mistake, (as KTVU did in its apology), and move on.*I'm sorry, but anyone with a quarter-brain reading those names would IMMEDIATELY have TOSSED the sheet. Still cannot fathom how that sheet made it past the desk, to the anchor chair.*Tori Campbell is known for being less-than-friendly--this whole affair isn't going to help her.*Karma factor: Several stations in the market aren't shedding any tears for KTVU. One major reason is the station's boasting of its coverage of the Asiana jet crash, (two days after it happened), and openly antagonizing other competitors. KPIX pounced on the KTVU mishap, (on its own website) and other personnel from the Battery gulch have been full of glee.*One major KTVU personality who was fortunate to have been away from the studios said many staffers are miserable. *Frank Somerville deserves a gold medal for valor; it was Somerville who read KTVU's apology and while it won't stop the rash, it was both emotionally resonant and convincing.*Follow me on Twitter*Tips-Inter-office e-mails: Rich.Lieberman@Gmail.com *All tips provided strictly confidentialThe PULSE of the MEDIA World from San Francisco, LA, Vegas and Beyond. The Rock's 'Hercules' Diet -- 7 Meals a Day, 3 lbs of Meat, 14 Eggs!!!

If you're wondering what it takes to look like The Rock (aside from ridiculous genetics), the new "Hercules" star just revealed the diet he maintains to play the son of Zeus -- and it's unbelievable. Rock just posted the breakdown on Twitter -- and it includes 7 full meals with ridiculous quantities of food, including rice, 14 egg whites, all kinds of vegetables, and more than 3 POUNDS of meat. It's been working too ... Rock's been posting pics of himself during filming (above) and he's more jacked than ever. Unfortunately, you can't just eat like The Rock to look like him ... you kinda have to go to the gym too.....Maybe tomorrow.

Game 2: Bruins Win A Boat Race

Boston scores early and often to take 2-0 series lead back home Brad Marchand's goal at just 28 seconds of the gameheated up Boston's goal lamp for the evening. (Getty)In Game 1 of the Conference Finals, the Boston Bruins shut down the Pittsburgh Penguins by taking advantage of the Pens overzealous attempt to play physical.  In Game 2 on Monday night, it was far simpler.  Boston was the better team from the opening puck drop to the final buzzer and laid a merciless 6-1 beating on the home team to take a two-zip series lead.On Saturday, Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke delivered a dirty hit from behind on Adam McQuaid, but the NHL announced on Sunday that Cooke would not face supplementary discipline for his major penalty and game misconduct.  The decision surely confused fans of the San Jose Sharks, whose similarly, historically-maligned Raffi Torres was booted for the entire series against Los Angeles for a lesser hit.The Bruins have always been ruled against by the NHL's Director of Player Safety, Brenden Shanahan.  In his two years, he's suspended Bruins for plays that often went undisciplined elsewhere, and he's let plays slide against the Bruins that regularly are given supplementary discipline. In the case of Cooke, he also wasn't suspended three years ago for a cheap shot that ultimately ended Bruin Marc Savard's career (before Shanahan took over the position), but the lack of suspension did have a benefit for Boston this time.  It ensured that Brad Marchand, who also dished out a hit from behind in Game 1, shouldn't face the wrath of the league for his play either. That paid dividends immediately for the Bruins, as Marchand blocked a Sidney Crosby pass at the point and was off to the races on the game's first shif.  "The Little Ball of Hate," as he's known both affectionately in Boston and with disdain everywhere else, won the sprint and finished his breakaway with a shot over the glove of Tomas Vokoun.  The goal at just 28 seconds set a tone that would continue throughout the evening."I knew (Crosby) was very fast, so I needed to make sure I skated as fast as I could," said Marchand of the goal.  "I had a few sticks on me and needed to make sure it went in." Boston outshot Pittsburgh by a lopsided 13-6 margin in the first period and that would translate onto the scoresheet.  Marchand's early score was just an appetizer, and by the 14:37 mark, Nathan Horton was ready to serve the main course.  He was able to get his stick on the rebound of Torey Krug shot to bury the puck for a 2-0 lead.A shift later, he doled out a second helping, as he took a drop pass from Milan Lucic on the right side of the slot and passed the parmesan to the left, where a wide open David Krejci was waiting to register his league-leading 20th playoff point.  The tally put Boston ahead by three at 16:31 and chased a visibly-rattled Vokoun from the game."The confidence certainly builds pretty quickly when you start off with an early lead in the visiting building,"  said Boston Head Coach Claude Julien." I thought our guys did a good job of playing a solid two-way game."Pittsburgh would counter when Brandon Sutter took a cross ice feed from Cooke heading through neutral ice.  He skated to the top of the circle and picked the far upstairs corner on Tuukka Rask to put the only blemish of the series on the goaltender's otherwise spotless slate. The goal at 19:26 should have given the Penguins an opportunity to gain momentum and restore the confidence of a frustrated crowd heading into the first intermission.  Unfortunately, there were still 34 seconds left to play, and Boston knew that more than the home team.Cooke tried to engage Marchand in some neutral zone gibberish with the clock running out, while Jaromir Jagr was stealing the puck from a Penguin in front of the Boston bench.  Jagr fed Bergeron and realizing the opportunity for a break, Marchand bolted away from Cooke and into the rush.Bergeron fed him coming over the blue line and the winger skated to the top of the circle and found the far corner over Marc-Andre Fleury.  The goaltender had been relieved of his duties after an atrocious four games against the New York Islanders in the first round, and the Marchand shot was the first one he'd seen since his removal.Pittsburgh seemed resolute to keep working hard despite the 4-1 deficit.  Marchand got whistled for the only penalty of the period by foolishly upending Crosby in Boston's offensive zone at 11:54.  The Penguins struggled on the power play, but did regain the flow of the game and outplayed the Bruins over the final 10 minutes of the frame. However, the shots ended at just 7-5 for the the Penguins on the period,.  While the scoring chances were there, Rask was able to stand strong for Boston.  He most notably made an excellent glove save on Paul Martin's point shot through traffic to carry the commanding lead into the second intermission.Trailing 4-1, the Penguins were losing their mental fortitude.  In the second, Pascal Dupuis confronted a ref over a disagreement on an offsides call that had very little bearing on the game as Pittsburgh wasn't even on a rush.  In the third, James Neal was seen yelling, "what the f*** was the whistle for?" after the puck had hit the safety net above the end glass.  This sort of frustration was a clear sign that the Penguins simply didn't have their heads in the game, as meaningless whistles like these shouldn't be the focus of their energy. While the Penguins might have been unraveling, the break gave the B's a chance to regain the step they seemed to have lost late in the second.  On the first shift, Jagr made a great cross ice dish to Bergeron in a setup that looked very similar to the team's third goal.  Like Krejci had done on that goal, Bergeron quickly potted the puck into the open side of the net to give Boston a commanding 5-1 lead just 27 seconds into the period.  It marked the second time in the game that the Bruins had scored in the first 30 seconds of period.Somewhere a fat lady must have been signing, as the fans slowly started to trickle out of a very disappointed CONSOL Energy Center.  The Penguins outshot the Bruins 14-11 in the third period, and while they had a few chances, they never looked like a team ready to fill the huge hole that they'd dug.Johnny Boychuk added a why-the-hell-not goal when his slap shot clanked the post and went in for the 6-1 lead at 18:36.  It seemed meaningless to most, but it signified a boat race to listeners of the Puck Podcast and allowed me to use the term in the title.  (A boat race is any game won by five goals or more.)  The term was fitting for the lopsided affair that saw one team leave the other sinking in its wake on Monday."We're obviously very happy with the outcome," said Marchand.  "We knew coming in that it was going to be a tough few games.  We got a little lucky and need to play better next game."Boston will now take a 2-0 series lead back home for Game 3 and has outscored Pittsburgh 9-1 in the series.  However, the team was adamant afterward that it had too much respect for the Penguins to get confident."We were in that situation before and were able to come back," Julien said, in reference to a 2011 series against Montreal in which Boston fell behind 2-0 at home and rallied to win in seven games, en route to the Stanley Cup.  "We've been through enough positives and negatives to not get ahead of ourselves.  The Penguins are a deep team, and we're going to need to continue to play well to win this series."The key for Boston will be the play of Rask.  Since tripping over himself and giving up an embarrassing goal in a Game 4 loss to the New York Rangers last round, he has looked dominant and given up just two goals in the three games since."It's tough to say really how confident you are," said Rask when asked about his confidence level after the game.  "You just want to feel confident, and I feel good.  I just try to be patient, and when I take the extra second and let it come to me, it's been helpful.  I've been really seeing the puck well lately."That confidence will need to continue as the Penguins possess the fire power to break loose at any point.  Pittsburgh led the league in offense during the regular season and was scoring at an astonishing clip of 4.27 goals per game in the playoffs before managing just one in two games against Boston.  Superstars like Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have been silenced so far, and the potent powerplay has gone O-fer on six chances.  (The teams are a combined 0-for-11 on their power plays in the series.)Pittsburgh will get their next crack at Rask and the Bruins, when they visit Boston on Wednesday night for an 8 p.m. puck drop on NBC Sports Network.  (I will be at the game, so my recap will likely get written Thursday night.)For the Bruins to take a stranglehold on the series, they will need to play disciplined hockey and continue to force the Penguins out of their offensive rhythm.  Most knew that Boston would be capable of ousting the Eastern Conference's top seed, but it earned that rank for a reason.Pittsburgh has the ability to dismantle any team in the league when it's on its game.  Game 3 might be a series-deciding moment as to whether the Penguins can regain their swagger or whether the Bruins defensive fortitude is just too much of an obstacle for them to overcome.

Iron Man 3 - The Armors and a review

Spoilers ahead!I loved Iron Man and Iron Man 2 FYI. I did come out of Iron Man 2 wishing they had more of Tony and Peppers relationship instead of them just coming together at the end. Whiplash was a cool character in concept and design but I think the filmmakers initial idea for Whiplash to go more compact and terroristic (See concept art by Ryan Mienerding that was revealed on the new box set with all the marvel movies) at the end of the movie was better than him build a big suit of armor and just have a big set of whips. But it did look cool at least and the suitcase armor was amazing with a cool armor-up process.from the art of Iron Man 2, taken by me, flash spot by my ignorance. So Iron Man 3 had me excited. I grew up watching the Iron Man cartoon so the Mandarin was a pretty familiar villain to me. I never really dug him that much and associate him with MODOK (can't we all agree he's a bad idea?) I don't know why mandarin was green...is that scurvy? I loved the Dark Knight feel that Shane Black's Iron Man script gave to the Mandarin. The Trevor moment made it even better for me and the moment near the end when Killian reveals that he IS the Mandarin is a sweet payout for fans. Also he can breathe fire. But only once for some reason. I hate when that happens to me! oh my.So the other twists were great too. The Maya double cross was great and the moment when Iron Man was hit by a car was confusing and a great moment for my brain to catch up with. The Extremis stuff was cool and the graphics were really excellent. I saw it on Imax 3d and the 3d was okay but it's definitely a trade off as you lose a lot of the detail you get from the digital format. I recommend seeing this movie at a drive in. Mostly for the sound quality you get. My paragraphs share no common theme.A wraparound of the mark 42 for toy design. The Mark 42 was an awesome running gag through the movie. What was shown to us in the trailers to be the ultimate suit of armor was just a messy prototype. When I told my Dad how Tony armors up with the mark 42 he rolled his eyes and I had to remind him it looks awesome so who cares. I think the concept was not a stretch for the Marvel Universe and really added some fun to the movie. Armoring up is my favorite part of the movie Iron Man and this movie had him going in and out of suits about 20 times. Seriously I think it was about that many. The finale had some great moments of him jumping in and out of suits and even just parts of the armor coming off. Concept art by Adi GranovMy only main complaints were Pepper in the finale (I don't know why. It just looked funny and was a weird idea for a newly Extremis'd person to beat the crap out of an experienced guy) and the under-powering of the armors in the finale. Some people say that they were all just prototype units, but I know they just did it to add some conflict and some cool explosions. And along with that they went and designed 35+ suits of armor and only showcased 5-6 of them. After the movie the first thing I did was try and find all the armors. Which was difficult. But I did it. Some dude scanned these in. Some are almost exactly the same as others but all in all I think they are great. I still can't figure out which one he was wearing in the finale when he was fighting on some scaffolding and had small vertical lights on both sides of his arc reactor. The Silver Centurion armor was one of my favorites.the heartbreaker armor-modeled after James Dean. The fight scenes were great. Every one. The fights without the armor or partially with the armor were maybe the best of the bunch too. My wife said, "Yeah right." Speaking of great the little kid was a fun addition and Tony's relationship with him was unexpected and fun. The movie had some great jokes and even some Downton Abbey which I addmittedly have watched. And other stuff happened in this movie. It was mostly good stuff. Let me know what you thought in the comments section! Enjoy the Marks 5-42! Scans from-http://forums.superherohype.com/showthread.php?t=455137&page=9I'm pretty sure they are from 'The Art of Iron Man 3' which comes out soon.

Mickey, Willie, and Everyone Else: A Conversation with Allen Barra

Allen Barra's new book is about Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle, and their relationship with each other, and everyone else.MAY 16, 2013 - 2:09PM | BY DAVID DAVIShttp://theclassical.orgIn "Mickey and Willie: Mantle and Mays, the Parallel Lives of Baseball's Golden Age" (Crown Archetype), the veteran author-journalist Allen Barra examines the mythic stature of two of the greatest center-fielders to play the game. The book is also a personal exodus of sorts, as Barra attempts to untangle the complex emotions he has about two childhood heroes."Mickey and Willie – they were given boys' names that they never grew out of," he writes. "The private lives of both men revealed that they were ill equipped for life after baseball, a fact that those of us who loved them found almost impossible to understand. How, though, could we have understood?"I emailed questions to Barra about writing and "Mickey and Willie," and he replied from his home in New Jersey. You helped Marvin Miller write his memoirs, entitled "A Whole Different Ball Game." What was it like to work with Marvin Miller? It was an education. I thought I knew enough to write a book on the business of baseball and the ongoing strife between the owners and the baseball union. I was amazed at how much I didn’t know. In the course of doing the book, I think I came to think a little like Marvin. That’s a gift I’ll always be grateful for.Do you think that Marvin Miller will ever be elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame? No, I don’t. If the players had stood up and demanded it, which they should have done, it would have happened. It is, after all, their Hall of Fame. But they didn’t. Anyway, Marvin was adamant he didn’t want in and stated so in several public letters. One of the last things he said to me was to please make that clear to anyone still calling for him to be elected.  So now the HOF can’t induct him without embarrassing themselves. It's been said that "all biography is at last autobiography." As the author of biographies about Paul "Bear" Bryant, Yogi Berra and now Mantle and Mays, do you find that statement to be true? How do you, as a writer, approach biography?Well, if all biography is autobiography, then I coached Alabama to six national championships and won ten World Series rings with the Yankees. Nope on that.I approach biography – and in this category I'll put Wyatt Earp, Bear Bryant and Yogi Berra – as men about whom much had been written but about whom I had never read what I wanted to read about them. There were too many unanswered questions, and that’s why I wrote those books. I don’t regard "Mickey and Willie" as biography. As the subtitle says, it’s a “parallel lives.” I was fascinated by the many things about them that were both similar and different. They were the same age, both children of the Depression, both southerners, both raised by baseball fathers and nurtured by the industrial league culture that thrived until a couple of years after World War II. They came to the Major Leagues in the same city and played against each other in the World Series in their rookie year, 1951. They ended up playing the same position, center field, and both were great all-around players. They both had actual names that others thought were nicknames, boys’ names. They were both booed by fans for not being Joe DiMaggio. Both loved going to the movies, especially westerns. As for the opposites – well, of course, one was white and one was black, so they lived most of their lives on different sides of American culture. There have been quite a few books about Mantle and Mays, including most recently James Hirsch's exhaustive biography of Mays and Jane Leavy's personal reportage about Mantle. Why did you feel there was room for another book about Mantle and Mays? What did you feel had not been discussed in previous works? All previous books, whether about them or ghosted by them, left out pretty much one element: each other. The similarities I mentioned above were seldom discussed except in passing. I never read anything, for instance, about Mickey and Willie barnstorming together, or about the many commercials and endorsements they did. (Thank you, George Lois.) Or, that Mickey was envious of Willie’s salary while Willie was envious of Mickey’s endorsements. In the end, each liked and respected the other enormously. They were compared endlessly. When I was growing up, “Who's better, Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays?” was practically the only baseball question that mattered. I think that’s largely forgotten today. You've written that "Mickey and Willie" is, at heart, about the concept of hero worship. What did you discover about that in researching and writing this book? Knowing what we know now, are Mantle and Mays still deserving of hero status? What I learned was that in their private lives they were at least as flawed as I am. That makes me feel both better and worse. I suppose the thing I learned that impressed me most is that being someone’s hero imposes an enormous burden of dreams on someone. But, finally, were they worthy of being called heroes? Yes, I think they were. I’ll give them that. Being my hero was a tough job, but in the end they did okay. You write that, after all these years, Willie Mays remains a cipher. Why? What happened to him?I don’t know that anything “happened” to him except everything he went through his whole life. After reading everything that has ever been written about Willie Mays, I can’t say I know him any better than I did before I started, at least in the sense of “What is the inner man really like? What were his dreams outside baseball, his aspirations?” What made me feel that more than anything else was that the two men who knew him best from the time he hit the major leagues, [authors] Arnold Hano and the late Charlie Einstein, were also baffled by him. You're a general manager in the spring of 1950. You have the choice of taking one ballplayer for your team: Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays. Who do you take and why?Well, I take Mickey for two simple reasons. In 1950 I don’t know what his history of injury is going to be, but I do know he’s white. It’s that simple. What I’m saying is that if I were a general manager in 1950, I don’t know that I would have thought differently than GMs did back then. From the perspective of ability, I don’t know that there was anything to make me choose one over the other. What's the subject of your next book?I’m not sure yet. I would love to write a dual biography of Ed and his late son Steve Sabol – how they built NFL Films and changed the way we look at sports. I also have been researching for years a book on how an Italian, a Jew, and an Irishman – Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky, and Owney Madden – created the modern mob.David Davis is a contributing writer at Los Angeles Magazine. He is the author of Showdown at Shepherd's Bush: The 1908 Marathon and the Three Runners Who Launched A Sporting Craze (St. Martin's). He lives in Los Angeles and is on Twitter at @ddavisla.

Evolution: A Course for Educators

Now You Too Can Be IndoctrinatedEvolutionist Joel Cracraft’s course Evolution: A Course for Educators is “informed” by those Next Generation Science Standards. That reminds us of how after the 2005 Dover trial, kangaroo-court Judge John Jones explained that his education for the case came from popular culture. And in this case, “popular culture” means evolutionary lies:When I went to law school in the late ’70s, I followed the progression of cases that we talked about before. I understood the general theme. I'd seen Inherit the Wind. For anyone, much less a federal judge, to cite Inherit the Wind as a legitimate, educational resource reveals how deeply evolutionary thought and its lies have penetrated the culture. The only educational value of Inherit the Wind is its lesson in evolutionary lies, and just how far they will go.You see the main tools of evolutionists are lies, and if evolution is to survive they must indoctrinate students with those lies, and if students are to be indoctrinated then teachers must first be indoctrinated. Enter Joel Cracraft who will teach educators about the “evidence” that supports evolution. While he is at it perhaps he can include the “evidence” that supports blood-letting and the flat Earth.
